MUSIC NOTES: A BETTER COVER

I know that no band wants to be known for their covers. But I enjoy a good cover song if only to bridge the gap between a personal music styling and mainstream musical appreciation. So, what does it say about a song, or a band for that matter, when a backyard party cover is light years ahead of the original. Specifically speaking, Bob Dylan's song: One More Cup of Coffee.

What I originally believed to be a Wailers song is in fact a Dylan song. Yes, I know he's a legend, famous, popular, blah, blah. I've never been a whole-hearted Dylan fan, and aside from a few songs, really don't buy into the hype. I've seen him live and thought even less. I know music is extremely personal and subjective and I really do try to be open minded. He just doesn't do it for me.

I was digging on iTunes for this specific song and was impressed by the range of artists who've covered it. Before my party, I'd never even heard of it. I fell in love with my personal live version and have been searching for something that might sound vaguely similar. In this search, I found an ensemble cover "band" called Sfuzzi East/West. Seemingly dedicated to cover songs and a close similarity to Jimmy Buffett.

Additionally, I'm enjoying a rendition of Buffett's Margaritaville by The Hit Crew (check it out on iTunes) and the Ring of Fire version by Social Distortion. I find these covers more clearly communicate the vibe created by Aaron Jones, Jeremy Trivelas and Chris Barnes.

Now, if only Edwin Matthias would record them and let me get my hands on a copy...
