MUSIC NOTE: SAM RUSSELL

I'm not a music reviewer. I don't have an endless knowledge of bands, lead singers and guitar models. I do, however, know what good music sounds like.

Opening for Pillow Army this past Thursday at the High Dive was a band I only caught a single song from. I was mesmerized by the energy and rocking good time had on stage that I couldn't look away or engage in further beer-induced conversation. This was the sound of Sam Russell with the Harborrats. Through the night, I got the opportunity to hang with the front man Sam himself. After the obligatory banter you would expect in a night time music spot, I got him to half commit to playing a live show at my birthday party. And this was before I heard the album.

You can imagine my further surprise when I really actually loved the music. I got to hear it outside of the live venue. In the privacy of my own car without any need for superficial thumbs-up and forced kindness. I really love this band. Songs like 'Abercrombie Girl' and 'The Legend of Christopher Moon' had me clapping and jumping in my seat. Catchy and upbeat songs that challenge you to stay still. Sam's voice is aged and seductive, completely removed from his youthful appearance, but making it that much more entertaining and intriguing.

You can check him out here. I highly recommend it.
