A DECADE PASSES

I've been an emotional train wreck lately. Not in a depressed, sad kind of way, but in a happy, blissful, lucky-girl kind of way.

This is a big year for me. For us. Back in grade school, I remember, as kids, sitting around talking about how 2010 was such a big deal and how we'd be 30! Old. I couldn't have imagined any better place to be in life, in love, than where I am today.

This year marks not only a 4-year old daughter and a 2-year old son, but a 10-year marriage. A decade spent with my man. I'm beyond thrilled at our accomplishment and am feeling pressure and stress to celebrate it with the fervor that it demands. So I took to one of the things that makes me most happy, music. Reaching into the vault of my adolescence, I'm making a mixed tape. Ten years of the songs that make me break out in goose bumps for the amazing memories they recall, the feelings they represent. As you might imagine, my true playlist would be taller than me, so I busted it down into 18 songs in chronological order (so I could get them all on the same CD).

This was an amazing trip down memory road - reaching back to the 90's. Each song conjures a memory that makes me smile. Some make me teary. Yep, even the rap songs.

Regulate - Warren G
This song is a big favorite of both of ours from our high school years. We can still bust out all the words.

Gettin' Jiggy With It - Will Smith
Who doesn't love Will Smith? Another song from the golden years of H. S.

Rock & Roll, Pt. 2 - Gary Glitter
Both avid baseball and hockey fans, many of our dates took place in sporting arenas. This song is hockey. At the Key.

Kernkraft 400 - Zombie Nation
Speaking of loving baseball, can you imagine anything other than a packed house, and the roar of the crowd after Edgar's homer? Remembering fireworks at the Kingdome...

Hip Hop Hooray - Naughty By Nature
The guy with the grin, Junior's song. Another baseball favorite. Remembering a time when there was such electricity at a ball game.

I Do (Cherish You) - 98 degrees
This is such a sappy song and if I had to pick over, I'd absolutely pick something different, but this was our 'wedding song'.

Wide Open Spaces - Dixie Chicks
Countless trips to Spokane and the Dixie Chicks. I was always impressed that Ryan would let me play this album over and over.

Who Are You - The Who
This is the theme song to CSI, the original that came out the year we got married. We were so loyal to this show, that I would sing the intro at the top of my lungs. Goofy? Yes. But it's ours.

Uncle John's Band - Jimmy Buffett
I'm less of a fan these days, but Ryan took me to 2 concerts (one in Portland the day he got hired by Burien FD).

Heaven - Los Lonely Boys
Another song recalling our child-free summers, dual income and nights spent at concert. We saw Los Lonely Boys at Concert on the Pier before they stopped doing them.

It Don't Matter - Donovan Frankenreiter
We kinda hate this song. Kinda hate the whole album. I'd bought it right around the time Daughter was born. Turned out it was the ONLY thing that would calm her colicky crying. Every night. We would just put the cd on repeat and dance around, listening to it for many hours every day.

Sweet Child O Mine - Guns & Roses
A much better song for remembering Daughter. This song could be sung about her, right down to her "eyes of the bluest skies".

Yeah! - Usher
This song first brings to mind Kevin James, then Mariner's Games. And it's way cool.

Let It Rock - Kevin Rudolf
This song is the Mariners. We went to 12 games as part of a season pass this year.

Boom - Flight of the Conchords
Oh how we love the Conchords. This is my favorite by far. You can't get the full effect unless you've seen the clip from the show, but it's worth your time on YouTube.

I'm Yours - Jason Mraz
If you don't know abut my massive crush on Jason, you must have just started reading. My husband has taken me to see him in concert 3 times and Husband learned this song on guitar to play it for my 30th birthday. Yes, I married that kind of man.

Say Hey (I love you) - Michael Franti & Spearhead
The last time we saw Mraz was at Bumbershoot and Michael Franti opened. The live rendition was so amazing, it turned me into an instant fan. And although I'm not too mushy about song lyrics...this is a goodie. "The more I see, the less I know, but I know one thing, I love you."

I Gotta Feeling - Black Eyed Peas
More 2009 Mariners music, but such an inspirational song. Yes, it's gonna be a good, good night as long as you believe it.

There you have it. Mock me if you want, but you can't deny the pull of music on your emotions. Here's to 10-years and bringing back the mixed tape.
