Maybe you can relate, maybe you can't. But I am sick and heart broken over one of my FAVORITE outdoor plants dying a slow ugly black death.
Four years ago, I brought a small, skinny green hellebore into my life. I caringly and carefully planted in 2 locations before finding him a home in the shady front corner of my house. For the past 3 years, he filled out, multiplying in size 3 and 4-fold each year! Giving me striking bold prehistoric-looking flowers -- he was a specimin for the picture books. And an easy subject to shoot.Imagine my concern and alarm at seeing him this week covered in white aphids, black rot and the ugly side of nature. His strong, leathery green leaves are no longer boldly standing, instead seemingly stained by the virus attacking him. HIs veins are now filled with black death. I might cry.
You might think I'm overreacting. It is, afterall, a plant. But his life is over. I nurtured him to his glory and now it's over. The only remedy for 'black death' is removal and destruction. Heart breaking.Good bye dear friend.
